Jule Conner, who has farmed the
original Conner Family Farm in Marion County, S.C. for the past
40 years
was quoted in the August 4 edition of the Marion Star, his community
newspaper. The article was about the opening of this year's tobacco
markets and quoted some of the local farmers about the important
decisions they are making concerning the future of growing and
selling this cash crop. Congress recently passed a bill requiring
the federal government to offer to buy-out tobacco quotas from
those farmers who want to get out of the business. The farmers
also have a choice of opting to stay in business by contracting
directly with manufacturers rather than participate in the market
auctions as they have done for many years. According to the article,
many of the farmers will choose the buyout. Jule reports that
he will see what the R.J. Reynolds Company will offer him to keep
growing his crops, although he intends to be very cautious under
the new system. Accompanying the article was a photo of Jule judging
the grade of his most recent tobacco.
