James Conner Jr. and his wife Anna Wise Conner

Born in 1866 in Florence County, South Carolina, James Jr. was the eldest son of James Conner Sr. and Nellie.

Like his brothers, James Jr. could read and write, a noted accomplishment as many people, both black and white, of that day were illiterate. James and Anna attended Wise Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Marion, South Carolina.

James Jr. died on January 2, 1933 at the age of 66. He was noted as widowed on his death certificate, so Anna must have died earlier. He was buried in Graham Cemetery on the 4th of January (undertaker was C.L. Pace, of Marion).

James Jr. and Anna had 10 children: James ("Bosie"), Lawrence, David, Leroy, Mary Jane, Nellie, Alice ("Missie"), Hallie, Desdie ("Sissy"), and Edward.

Anna Wise Conner was born on April 3, 1875 in Marion County and died August 3, 1928 at the age of 53 and buried in Graham Cemetery.

Deedy "Mack or Mackie" Evans (born in June, 1853) was Anna's mother (James Jr.'s mother-in-law) . Anna's father was Robert Wise, a white man, never married to Deedy. Deedy is found enumerated in the 1870 census along with Robert and their son Thomas, then 3 years old. Robert Wise later allocated 570 acres of land to Deedy. After Robert's death that land fell into the hands of a land baron named E.I. Hughes. Wise Chapel was built by Robert Wise and the land it stands on was later deeded to the church on August 27, 1886 by D. Murchinson for one dollar.
(note: the Wise Family burial site was recorded)

Deedy had 3 other children (Anna's brothers), Tom, Lawrence and Julius, none of who were listed in the 1900 census enumerating the household of James Jr. where we see Deedy and Anna listed. One son, Julius, married Lucy Wise. Julius and Lucy are buried at Union Cemetery in Florence along with their daughter, Marian and Marian's husband, James Miller.
